What are some little known facts about McDonalds
McDonald’s Coffee Lawsuit
In 1994 , Stella Liebeck ordered coffee from McDonald’s and was in a parked car with her grandson sitting in the passenger seat when she accidentally spilled the coffee all over her. She admitted that the spill was her mistake. But her burns were horrifying , she had 3rd degree burns on her legs and genitals. She had to take a lot of medical help and the doctors said that it was the worst burns that they had ever seen from coffee.
Stella was left permanently disfigured.
The reason for the kind of burns she suffered was the fact that McDonald’s was serving coffee at a temperature of 88 degrees Celsius (Just below boiling temperature). McDonald’s agreed that coffee at that temperature was a hazard. A lot of other similar cases then came to light after this incident.
All of the medical attention that Stella required accounted to about 20k dollars for her, which was out of her budget so she requested McDonald’s to pay her bills. But McDonald’s offered to help for only 800 dollars. She took the matter to court and we all know what happened after that.
Stella got 200k Dollars(medical help) + 2.7 million Dollars(punitive damages) as compensation and it turned out to be one of those rare cases where a common person defeated a lot of corporate lawyers. Eventually McDonald’s reduced the temperature of their coffee to a more edible and non 3rd degree burns temperature.
